The History of  “Canine Cryogenics Canada

When a breeder makes decisions with respect to any aspect of their dog breeding business,  the priority considerations when accessing their resources is who is the best, how well do they know their business and product, what is their history and where is the best value for the dollar.

These are questions that Canine Cryogenics Canada also ask .... why? .... because we are breeders as well!

To answer these questions a little history is needed.

The owner of Canine Cryogenics Canada has been involved in many aspects of the purebred “dog world’ for nearly 40 years with a family history in dogs going back another 2 generations beyond this.  Our involvement has been primarily in showing and breeding English Setters with experience in a number of other breeds including Irish Setters, Beagles, Golden Retrievers, Afghan Hounds and Springer Spaniels.

As with most dog fanciers the training, showing and breeding of dogs is more of a full time hobby than a money making venture that necessitates other ventures to earn a living.  This leads into the specific history of the company .....

In 1980 a newly graduated veterinary technologist with a love for animals, their health and their welfare began a venture in the veterinary field. The focus of the work at the time was on researching potential cures, improved management and treatment of bleeding diseases, primarily hemophilia A.  The study of the disease involved the evaluation of dogs with this bleeding disorder.  Within a relatively short period of time, a unique genetic ‘anomaly’ was discovered in a population of dogs that mimicked hemophilia A in humans.

This uniqueness generated much interest in the science world and a means to ensure the preservation of the genetic anomaly became important and you guessed it ........ freeze sperm from family members.  This was the formative years of Canine Cryogenics Canada.

After a few trial and error projects an effective method was acquired as part of a scientific exchange with other groups interested in the uniqueness of these dogs and their genes.

Over the next few years or so, many of the key stud dogs were ‘preserved’ with all the indicators being that the method was effective as it should be based on work done by the developers of this methodology.

In non-professional life, the breeding of English Setters continued with many great dogs produced with limited breeding’s, the foundations of which had originated in the late 60's and early 70's.  As is typical of any breeding program, things change both positive and negative.

Evaluation of a breeding program therefore leads to decisions on what has been gained and lost over the generations and how to best continue to improve on the respective breed and bloodline in particular.  With respect to our particular bloodline of English Setters,  there had been many great improvements but also some key elements of our line had changed or been lost.

Why hadn’t we frozen sperm from some of our key stud dogs?!!

An obvious question with no obvious answer! The solution was to embark on a business to ensure that this doesn’t happen in the future ....... we have the technology and we have the birth of Canine Cryogenics Canada!

Because these sentiments as well as others were shared by many other breeders, including those in breeds other than our own an obvious conclusion was made,  provide a service with a knowledge base on the technology with the experience and perspective of a dog breeder.

In 1997 the venture began with the goal to indeed provide a quality service that is affordable and accessible to fellow dog breeders.  There were typical ‘roadblocks’ in the formative years, particularly the restrictions placed on the company in consideration of the fact that the owner was not a veterinarian.  The goal as the owner was to have control over the management of the operation so that the company continues to operate with the breeder in mind.  This is how things continue today.

One of the most important aspects of this philosophy is the ability to provide a proprietary methodology with the knowledge and opportunity to ‘tweak’ or modify the conditions that optimize the probability of a successful freeze and ultimately the production of a litter.  This is not always the case in other methodologies.

In summary, what does Canine Cryogenics Canada have to offer?

  • decades of experience as a breeder
  • a proprietary methodology for freezing sperm
  • reasonable pricing
  • special consideration for foundation lines in rare and unrecognized breeds
  • import and export services
