What You Need To Do - Prior To Sperm Freezing
The CKC and Agriculture & Agri-Food Canada, require a few specific things in order to enable the processing of the documentation for registration of your stud dog's sperm. Many of these requirements will also have to be met if you plan on exporting your stud's sperm.
It is wise to plan ahead to ensure that there are no complications or delays in the registration of your dog's sperm.
The following is a list of the specific requirements :
- You will have to make an appointment with CCC's veterinarian for a 'physical' exam to provide a clean bill of health. It is suggested that you also bring documentation providing proof of vaccination.
- A negative brucellosis test will be required, but this testing can be done after it has been determined that the collected sample is suitable for freezing. The sperm cannot be registered with the CKC until this is completed (contact CCC for more detailed information).
- Proof of ownership such as registration certificate.
- In our experience the best collections and hence the best quality sample is one from a dog using a 'teaser' bitch, so between you as the owner and us, we try to have one available on the day of collection. Clearly you as the owner likely know best as to whether this is a requirement or not with your dog.
If you plan on exporting any or all of your stud's sperm, there may be additional requirements to those stated above. It is important that the Canine Cryogenics Canada be notified in advance of your intent, so that the specific requirements for the importing country can be determined.
